Heads Up! Microsoft Teams Is Adding Alerts for Sketchy Links
Just got a message with a link in Teams and it seems a little... off? Microsoft is rolling out a new safety feature to flag dangerous links, so you don't accidentally click on a scam. It's about time, right?
Microsoft just announced something new through the Microsoft 365 Message Center: Teams is getting a protection upgrade. Soon, it'll start alerting you when a message has a link that's been flagged as dangerous. This new feature is heading into public preview in September 2025 and should be available for everyone by November. The best part? It won't cost extra for Microsoft Defender for Office 365 customers or anyone using Teams for work.
In their statement, Microsoft explained that this is all about beefing up security against a huge rise in phishing and malicious link attacks. "To help users stay safe from bad stuff, we're bringing message warnings to Microsoft Teams," the company said. The goal is twofold: get people to be more careful and add to the protections already in place, like Safe Links, which automatically block some suspicious content. Microsoft is making a proactive move to lower the risks in a tool that more than 320 million people use every month.
So how will it work? The alert will show up as a banner right on the message, whether it came from someone inside or outside your company. The person who sent the link will also get a notification if it's flagged as malicious. The links will be checked by Microsoft Defender, which uses a big database of threats and some automated detection magic. If a link becomes dangerous after it's been sent, the warning can be added to the message retroactively, up to 48 hours later.
There are still a few questions, though. Microsoft hasn't said exactly how the alerts will work on mobile, or how much control admins will have over the settings. Admins will be able to turn the feature on or off through the Teams Admin Center, but we don't know yet what impact it might have on performance or compatibility.
