PlayStation Has the Perfect Excuse to Revive One Dormant IP in the Near Future

Over the past decade, PlayStation has leaned more heavily on its first-party intellectual properties. Although Sony maintains strong partnerships with third-party publishers such as Capcom and Konami, it’s the first-party titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us, and Horizon that truly highlight the capabilities of PlayStation’s latest hardware and attract new users. However, these first-party IPs serve a purpose beyond merely selling consoles.

In the last few years, PlayStation has been steadily making its way into the broader entertainment world, with its strong portfolio of first-party IPs leading the way. The live-action films like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as HBO’s The Last of Us series, are just the beginning of PlayStation’s plans, and there’s an exciting live-action project on the way that could revive a franchise that has been dormant for a while.

Gravity Rush Could Be On The Verge of a Comeback

A Gravity Rush Movie Is In The Works

Back in August 2022, Matt Grobar from Deadline revealed that PlayStation Productions was teaming up with Scott Free Productions to create a Gravity Rush movie. The script was to be written by Emily Jerome, with Anna Mastro directing. Sony finally confirmed the project in January 2024, when they presented some brief footage of the live-action Gravity Rush film at CES.

The brief footage from Sony didn’t receive much attention, and there haven’t been any official updates about the Gravity Rush movie since CES 2024. However, fans are still hopeful that the live-action adaptation is in the works, and they might be able to see it within the next year or two, as long as there are no significant behind-the-scenes problems that the public is unaware of.

The Gravity Rush Movie Could Start a Chain Reaction

First introduced in 2012, Gravity Rush is a short-lived franchise from Sony’s Japan Studio, a team famous for creating beloved games like Ape Escape, LocoRoco, Patapon, and the early Astro Bot series. This action-adventure title was originally exclusive to the PS Vita and features Kat, a girl gifted with the power to manipulate gravity.

Gravity Rush did receive a PS4 remaster from Bluepoint in 2016 and a sequel shortly after, but it hasn’t become one of PlayStation’s standout titles, even with its favorable critical reception. This makes the idea of a live-action movie based on Gravity Rush feel a bit peculiar for Sony, particularly when you look at their upcoming live-action projects, which include titles like Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn.

With enough care, attention, and talent, anything can turn out great. If the live-action adaptation of Gravity Rush becomes successful, it would make perfect sense for PlayStation to revive the game series. This revival would align well with Sony’s rumored plans to revisit some of their lesser-known intellectual properties, as reported by VGC’s Andy Robinson. He mentioned that PlayStation is looking to bring back some “deep-cut old IP” to complement their major first-party releases. Gravity Rush would be a fantastic choice for a smaller title to fill the gaps between big franchise launches like Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet or the upcoming God of War.
