Blizzard Commemorates 20 Years of World of Warcraft with Overwatch 2 Crossover

This year, Blizzard is marking the 20th anniversary of its iconic MMORPG, World of Warcraft, with an exciting collaboration that brings some familiar character skins from WoW into Overwatch 2.

Crossovers are increasingly popular in the realm of live-service games, but it can be amusing to see a developer partnering with itself. Blizzard has embraced this concept with its recent announcement. In November, World of Warcraft will officially turn 20, and to celebrate, the company released a playful trailer showcasing the unique collaboration with its other major franchise, Overwatch. The trailer presents a theme-park ride concept, likely inspired by the beloved Blizzard World map, which resembles a theme park based on the Blizzard universe.

The trailer invites players to "join the celebration as Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft unite the realms for a legendary crossover event!" It encourages players to choose between the Horde or the Alliance while embodying iconic heroes of Overwatch who will pay homage to the legendary characters of Azeroth. Players can look forward to acquiring four distinct skins when the collaboration launches on September 17. These include Reinhardt dressed as The Lich King, Widowmaker embodying Sylvanas Windrunner, Torbjorn as Magni Bronzebeard, and Zenyatta resembling Thrall.

This collaboration is introduced as part of Overwatch 2’s twelfth season, which recently included the introduction of a new support hero named Juno, along with new maps and the Clash mode. Currently, no additional details about the collaboration have been disclosed, and expectations should be tempered as the launch draws near. It seems likely that the event will focus solely on the character skins, so players should manage their hopes accordingly.

As the anniversary approaches, fans of both games eagerly anticipate the integration of these classic elements into the Overwatch universe.
