Exciting news! Two new Avengers movies are on the way, set to arrive more than five years after Endgame. Recent reports have confirmed the production start date for Avengers: Doomsday, and if everything goes smoothly during filming, it should be ready for its 2026 release.
Marvel Studios revealed the titles for two upcoming films, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, during the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con. Initially, The Kang Dynasty was set to depict the Avengers sneaking onto Kang’s starship, known as Damocles Base. However, due to lead actor Jonathan Majors facing legal issues, Marvel decided to let him go and rebranded the film as Avengers: Doomsday, featuring Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as the iconic villain Victor Von Doom, or Doctor Doom. The storyline shifted away from the original concept in light of the controversy and mixed reactions surrounding the supervillain. In July 2024, Marvel officially announced the new title for Avengers 5 as Avengers: Doomsday.
The most recent Avengers film, Avengers: Endgame, hit theaters in 2019, meaning fans have been eagerly awaiting a new installment for over five years. According to a document obtained by Maxblizz, filming is set to kick off in March 2025 in London, UK, and will continue for five months, concluding in August 2025. Excitingly, The Fantastic Four will be included in this film, with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss listed in the document. Additionally, several stars from Thunderbolts, including Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kramen, and Olga Kurtylenko, will also be part of the Doomsday production. Fans can also look forward to the return of beloved characters like Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, and Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.
Chris Evans, known for his role as Steve Rogers, or Captain America, in several MCU films, is set to make a return. However, the specifics of his role are still under wraps. There are whispers that he might don the star-spangled suit once more, even after officially passing the Captain America mantle to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, also known as Falcon. Some speculate he could also return as Johnny Storm, a character he previously played, which aligns with his appearances in Deadpool and Wolverine. Evans might step back into one of his old MCU roles or take on something entirely new. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. will not be reprising his iconic Iron Man role, as he is expected to portray a supervillain in this film. Additionally, Hayley Atwell and Ana de Armas have been mentioned, with Atwell likely returning as Peggy Carter. As for de Armas, details about her character remain vague, with only a mention of her involvement in a role.
Considering the current production schedule, it seems highly likely that Avengers: Doomsday will stay on track. With filming expected to finish in August, there’s still a solid nine months available for post-production. Barring any significant strikes or health crises, fans can look forward to seeing the next Avengers film in theaters next year. It’s about time, too, since it’s been more than five years since the last Avengers installment.
The casting for the next Avengers adventure is still a bit of a mystery. In previous films, we saw Iron Man and Captain America take charge. There’s a chance that Mackie’s Captain America could step up as the leader this time. However, with Evans also involved, his character’s role is definitely something to keep an eye on. The Fantastic Four are likely to clash with Captain America, while the Thunderbolts might find themselves reluctantly teaming up, given their morally ambiguous nature. With such a diverse cast of characters, Avengers: Doomsday is bound to be an exciting ride.
