Nintendo has officially unveiled the Switch 2, and it looks like the Joy-Cons will feature mouse-like capabilities. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the successor to the hugely popular hybrid console from 2017, and the reveal trailer has confirmed many of the speculations. A major highlight from the Switch 2 announcement is the potential for users to operate their Joy-Cons similarly to a computer mouse, a feature that hasn’t been available from Nintendo since the SNES era.
The Switch 2 trailer was released on January 16, confirming a lot of what fans had anticipated due to various leaks. However, there are still some aspects of the visuals that leave room for interpretation, especially regarding the Joy-Cons. While it doesn’t clearly state that the controllers feature mouse functionality, there are hints suggesting it might be a possibility.
About halfway through the first-look trailer, there’s a moment where two Joy-Con gliding attachments are seen sliding side-down across a flat surface. This quick clip doesn’t showcase any related action on-screen, but it seems to illustrate how the controllers could function similarly to a computer mouse. Earlier speculations hinted that the Switch 2 might have mouse-like capabilities, as shipping documents referenced protective tape commonly used for computer mice. Additionally, leaked images appeared to reveal what many believed were optical sensors on the Joy-Con that was sliding face-down in the trailer.
Nintendo Switch 2 Trailer Seemingly Confirms Joy-Con Mouse Functionality
The trailer revealed that mouse-like functionality for the Joy-Cons isn’t the only exciting feature. Back in late 2024, leakers hinted at magnetic Joy-Cons and a U-shaped kickstand for the Switch 2, both of which were confirmed in the official announcement. The trailer also introduced a puzzling “C” button beneath the home button on the right Joy-Con, a bigger screen, an additional USB-C port on the console’s top, and new buttons on the back of the controllers. It seems the system matches the predictions from leaks and rumors quite well.

Should the new Joy-Con functionality match what we see in the video, the Switch 2 won’t stand alone in this aspect. The recently revealed Lenovo Legion GO features a controller that can detach and offers mouse-like controls, much like the Joy-Cons from Nintendo. Fans eager to know more about the Switch 2’s specifications will likely have to hold on until the Direct on April 2.
