“Round and Round” Is a Famous Korean Children’s Song

Have you heard about the viral Korean song that everyone can’t stop talking about? It’s called “Round and Round,” created by two of Korea’s leading children’s authors. Although we couldn’t pinpoint when it was written, “Round and Round” has been a beloved tune in Korea for quite a while.

“Round and Round” Was Written by Jeong Geun and Lee Soo-in

Let’s explore the talented individuals behind “Round and Round”: Jeong Geun, who penned the lyrics, and Dr. Lee Soo-In, who composed the music. Jeong Geun has a background as a TV writer, contributing to various Korean children’s programs. Meanwhile, Dr. Lee Soo-In is known for his work as a lyric composer and his dedication to promoting classical music education for children.

Jeong Geun grew up in Gwangju, a bustling city in South Korea. He attended Daegu Normal University, which is now known as Kyungpook National University, a school renowned for its commitment to educating future teachers. Once he graduated, he embarked on a journey as a lyricist and composer, and he also established the Gaerona Choir in Gwangju.

In his thirties, Jeong Geun kicked off his career at KBS (the Korean Broadcasting System), where he developed shows such as Youngie’s Diary and Let’s Gather and Sing. He also made his mark as a writer for various KBS programs, including Who’s Better, TV Kindergarten One, Two, Three, and Ding, Dong, Dang.

As his career progressed, Jeong Geun began writing children’s literature, such as the Korean picture book titled Mango Grandma. He also took on the role of director at the Korea Music Copyright Association and provided guidance to the Korea Recreation Association.

Growing up in the vibrant port city of Masan, South Korea, which is now part of Changwon, Dr. Lee Soo-In developed a love for music as a teenager. He enjoyed singing hymns and playing the piano in his church. His musical journey continued at Sorabol Arts College in Seoul, where he studied under the guidance of the famous first-generation Korean lyric composer, Kim Dong-jin.

Following his graduation, Dr. Lee Soo-In took on the role of conductor for the KBS Children’s Choir, a position he enjoyed for many years. He went on to establish the Bluebird Children’s Song Association, known as “Parang se Chang-jak Tongyohae,” which consists of talented young composers creating classical music for children. One of the group’s key projects involves providing music books and recordings to elementary schools throughout Korea.

The Song Streams on the Same YouTube Channel as “Baby Shark”

The legacy of “Round and Round” has continued to thrive well beyond its creation, establishing itself as a key part of Korean educational programming. Additionally, this catchy tune is linked to the worldwide hit “Baby Shark.” Both songs feature music videos on Pinkfong, which is among the largest children’s YouTube channels globally.

Sharp-eyed fans might catch a nod to Pinkfong’s “Round and Round” in Squid Game. In the chorus, Thanos and Nam-gyu (Jae-won Roh) twirl around with their arms intertwined, echoing the playful dance from the Pinkfong video.
