Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

A new job listing from PlayStation reveals that Sony has established a brand-new AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This yet-to-be-announced team marks the 20th studio within the PlayStation first-party family and appears to be developing an exciting new AAA intellectual property for the PS5.

PlayStation’s first-party studios are some of the most celebrated in the gaming world, creating a buzz around their upcoming projects. Enthusiastic fans eagerly anticipate updates on future titles from studios like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Recently, PlayStation has broadened its lineup of first-party teams by bringing in established development partners such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite. Additionally, there’s an exciting new PlayStation studio that fans should keep an eye on.

A new first-party PlayStation studio, yet to be named, is situated in Los Angeles, California, and is currently developing a revolutionary original AAA IP. This was highlighted in a recent job listing for a Project Senior Producer, which confirms the existence of a “newly-established AAA studio” in the area. There are various speculations about which internal team this might be, with one theory pointing to the spin-off PlayStation team that is working on Bungie’s Gummybears incubation project. This project was mentioned during the Bungie layoffs in July 2024, where it was disclosed that 155 staff members would transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment in the following quarters.

PlayStation’s Newest Internal Studio Might Have Been Salvaged From a Failed Partnership

Another potential member of PlayStation’s upcoming AAA studio is the team headed by Jason Blundell, a well-known developer from the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. Blundell had previously worked with PlayStation as a co-founder of Deviation Games, where the new studio was developing a fresh AAA IP for the PS5. Unfortunately, some undisclosed issues led to Blundell leaving Deviation Games in 2022, and the studio eventually closed its doors in March 2024. Interestingly, in May 2024, it was revealed that many former employees of Deviation Games had joined PlayStation, forming a new team under Blundell’s leadership.

Considering that Blundell’s team has been in the works for a longer time than the Bungie spin-off team, it’s quite possible that PlayStation’s new internal studio is where the former is based. The specifics of what Blundell’s team is creating are still unclear, but fans are guessing it could involve continuing or rebooting Deviation Games’ unfortunate AAA project. It may take a few years before Sony reveals anything significant about this new studio, but for the moment, fans are thrilled to know there’s another PlayStation first-party game in development.
