↖ Pocketpair Faces Legal Action from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company
Update as of September 19, 2024, 10:00 AM BST: Pocketpair, the indie game developer behind the popular title Palworld, has confirmed via their official Twitter account that they are facing a lawsuit for alleged patent infringement. The company released a statement detailing their current situation.
The statement reads, “We were informed yesterday about a lawsuit claiming patent infringement against our company. We will initiate the necessary legal actions to address these allegations promptly. Currently, we are not aware of the specific patents we are purportedly infringing and have not received any further details.”
Based in Tokyo, Pocketpair is a small indie game studio dedicated to creating enjoyable gaming experiences. The team expressed their commitment to this mission, highlighting that their games have resonated with millions of players around the globe. Palworld, released this year, exceeded both the developers’ and the players’ expectations, garnering remarkable attention and positive feedback. The team is devoted to further enhancing the game to satisfy their fanbase.
The statement continued, “It is regrettable that we must divert significant time and resources to matters unrelated to game development due to this lawsuit. Nonetheless, we are committed to serving our fans and ensuring that indie developers are not deterred from pursuing their creative visions. We apologize for any anxiety or concern this news may have caused our supporters, and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing loyalty to Palworld and Pocketpair.”
The lawsuit represents a substantial escalation in the tension between Pocketpair and the gaming giants. Reports indicate that Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have initiated legal proceedings against Pocketpair, asserting that Palworld infringes on various patent rights.
The legal action was officially announced on September 18, 2024, via a statement issued on Nintendo’s corporate website. The release specifies, “This lawsuit aims to secure an injunction against the alleged infringement and seek compensation for damages, claiming that Palworld, developed and released by the Defendant, violates multiple patent protections.”
Additionally, Nintendo reaffirmed its stance on protecting its intellectual property, stating, “Nintendo will persist in taking all necessary actions against any violations of its intellectual property rights, including safeguarding the Nintendo brand, which has been established through considerable effort over the years.”
VG247 has reached out to Pocketpair for a response regarding this unfolding situation.
Earlier this year, The Pokémon Company announced its intention to investigate and address any actions infringing its intellectual property concerning Pokémon. However, in June, Pocketpair’s CEO, Takuro Mizobe, indicated that the company had not received any communications following that statement.
This lawsuit surfaces shortly after hints of a potential PlayStation 5 port of Palworld were suggested at the Tokyo Game Show, which may have coincided with the timing of the legal action.
As this story develops, it raises questions about the future of Palworld and the challenges faced by indie developers in the competitive gaming landscape.
