Get ready to revisit the chilling town of Derry, Maine, with the highly anticipated series IT: Welcome to Derry. This HBO show serves as a prequel to the blockbuster IT films that captivated audiences in 2017 and 2019. If everything unfolds as planned, we might be treated to more than just one season of this thrilling journey!
In the two IT films, Bill Skarsgard portrayed the infamous killer clown Pennywise, who terrorized a group of children in Derry in 1988 and later returned to haunt them as adults in 2016. As established in King’s novel, Pennywise rises every 27 years to unleash chaos, and the new HBO series, IT: Welcome to Derry, will delve into another of his violent episodes. This series is set in 1962, which is the cycle before the events depicted in the first IT movie. The cast features Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, and James Remar, with Skarsgard back as Pennywise and also serving as an executive producer.
IT: Welcome To Derry Has A Three-Season Plan
Andy Muschietti, the director behind the latest IT films, is making a return to the IT franchise with Welcome to Derry. He’s also one of the creators of the new series. Set to premiere in 2025, Muschietti is already thinking ahead to future seasons, as he shared in a recent chat with Radio TU. According to Bloody Disgusting, the producer mentioned that they have plans for three seasons of IT: Welcome to Derry, each set in a different era. “The first season takes place in 1962, the second in 1935, and the third in 1908,” Muschietti explained, noting that the story is being told in reverse order for a specific reason.
So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908.
Each Season of IT: Welcome to Derry Will Cover A Catastrophic Event
According to the producer, each installment will revolve around a “catastrophic event” that happens around the time Pennywise makes his comeback. Muschietti pointed out several key events that the series will explore, such as the fire at the Black Spot affecting Mike Hanlon’s father, William, the Bradley Gang massacre, and the Kitchener Ironworks explosion. This suggests that IT: Welcome to Derry may follow an anthology approach, featuring new characters each season who are tied together by their experiences with Pennywise. It’s also worth mentioning that HBO hasn’t officially confirmed IT: Welcome to Derry for more than one season yet, but if it’s successful, there’s a solid plan for future seasons.
Skarsgard recently reassured fans that the adaptation of IT for television will not be softened, emphasizing that Welcome to Derry is going to be intense. While IT: Welcome to Derry doesn’t have a premiere date just yet, it’s anticipated to launch on HBO later this year, following the conclusion of other original series like The White Lotus and The Last of Us.
