Spiders’ eagerly awaited Greedfall 2, which entered early access this past September, hasn’t quite managed to win over players. The first Greedfall, despite its imperfections, developed a loyal fanbase due to its unique world and RPG elements similar to those of BioWare, which helped mask its technical problems. Unfortunately, Greedfall 2 appears to be plagued by the same shortcomings, but it doesn’t offer the compelling gameplay or narrative to make up for them.
So far, the reception has been quite mixed, to say the least. While there are worries about the completely overhauled combat system and the somewhat outdated dialogue and choice mechanics, fans of the original game are still holding onto a sense of cautious optimism regarding Greedfall 2’s potential recovery. This is especially true since Spiders has hinted at a significant delay for the game’s 1.0 release. The 0.2 update for Greedfall 2, which was supposed to bring in new characters, regions, quests, and other major features, has been postponed indefinitely and is still not available as of now. Spiders has pointed to the early access feedback as the reason for this delay, emphasizing that the development team is focused on “addressing feedback and refining certain elements of the game.” This means it might be a while before we see the final version, which is disappointing but also presents a great opportunity for improvement.
Greedfall 2’s Lengthy Development Process Could Make Room for a Nintendo Switch 2 Port
The Nintendo Switch Is Lacking Traditional Western RPGs
JRPGs have consistently enjoyed a solid presence on the Switch and earlier Nintendo consoles, but western role-playing games haven’t been as prominently showcased. The Switch has made strides in improving the representation of western RPGs, bringing in major titles like The Witcher 3 and Skyrim. However, notable franchises like Dragon Age and Mass Effect are still surprisingly missing from the platform.
Greedfall 2 might just be the answer to this gap. While the current Nintendo Switch likely can’t handle the game without significant compromises, there’s been a lot of buzz about the more powerful Nintendo Switch 2 potentially launching this year. Given that one of the main issues with the Switch has been its limited selection of major third-party titles, it seems reasonable to think that Nintendo could aim to make its next console more developer-friendly, which would help in bringing games like Greedfall 2 to the platform. This is purely speculation, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Nintendo wanted the Switch 2 to feature a wider array of popular games.
Greedfall 2’s Release Date Is Undefined, So More Time In the Oven Won’t Hurt
Bringing a game to a new platform can take a lot of time and resources, and it’s understandable that dedicated Greedfall fans are eager for the sequel to arrive sooner rather than later. However, with Greedfall 2 potentially still a few years away, Spiders might find an opportunity to work on a Switch 2 port during this time without facing much criticism from fans. This way, when the game is finally released, it can attract a larger audience and tap into a market that currently lacks sufficient offerings.
RPGs that emphasize storytelling are perfect for the Switch, as its portable design complements lengthy, narrative-driven games like those found in the Persona series. Greedfall 2 has the potential to broaden Nintendo’s collection of these RPGs, showcasing the western, “BioWare-style” aspect of the genre while also demonstrating the capabilities of the Switch 2. If there are delays in the game’s release, perhaps Spiders can make a grand return with the support of the Switch 2.
