Wartorn is the upcoming game from Stray Kite Studios, a team of experienced developers with a rich history in the gaming industry. This tactical roguelite is set to be released on PC in spring 2025 and will be the studio’s first original title.
Stray Kite Studios, founded in 2018, is a Dallas-based game developer with a workforce of about 30 by 2025. The team includes veterans from popular games such as BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires. To date, they have launched the standalone version of Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, known as A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure, and created a variety of Creative maps for Fortnite.
The company has just launched its inaugural original game, Wartorn. This title blends real-time strategy with roguelite features, following the adventure of two elven sisters on a quest to find their family. Their path will be fraught with challenges, including tough battles and ethically complex choices.
Wartorn Is Chaotic in More Than One Way
In Wartorn, players enter a fantasy world that is profoundly fragmented and chaotic, putting the protagonists to the test in multiple ways. A notable feature of the game is its physics-driven environmental destruction, which adds an element of unpredictability to each encounter. The overarching theme revolves around discovering purpose in the midst of chaos. Paul Hellquist, co-founder and creative director of Stray Kite Studios, stated, “We’ve put our hearts into developing a game that not only entertains but also inspires players to think about sacrifice, survival, and the ties that bring us together.”
Wartorn Will Require Players To Make Tough Decisions
Between battles, players of Wartorn will face tough choices, such as deciding which character to nourish or who to rescue from imminent danger. These decisions will enhance the game’s narrative-driven roguelite experience, ensuring that each playthrough feels distinct. During combat, players will also enjoy a similar level of freedom, thanks to a magic system that lets them creatively combine elemental forces like fire, water, and lightning. Each spell will not only interact differently with one another but will also have various situational uses, such as electrifying foes in water or igniting enemies drenched in tar.
We’ve dedicated ourselves to crafting a game that not only provides entertainment but also encourages players to reflect on themes of sacrifice, survival, and the connections that bring us together.
As you would expect from a roguelite, Wartorn includes a progression system where upgrades persist across runs, making each new attempt slightly easier. The game’s visuals strive for a painterly look, adding to the dramatic atmosphere of its setting. To enhance accessibility, Wartorn will feature a slowdown option, enabling players to give detailed commands to their characters during the hectic gameplay. This newly announced game is slated for early access in spring 2025 and will be available on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
