Dynasty Warriors: Origins – How To Unlock & Use The Horse

In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, you won’t find a dedicated sprint button. Instead, your character automatically starts sprinting after taking a few steps. Although sprinting helps you move quickly, you’ll frequently need to dash across large battlefields to reach other officers in time to rescue them and secure victory.

Your horse plays a crucial role here, as you can summon it at any moment, whether you’re exploring the overworld or engaged in battle. If you like quick hit-and-run tactics, you can even fight from your horse! Let’s go over how to acquire your first horse, level it up, and swap it for other steeds.

How To Unlock The First Horse In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

In Chapter 1, you can acquire your first horse at no cost by speaking to a merchant who appears in the overworld. He will show up after you complete the second major battle, “Test Of Zheng Fei,” and you can find him on your way to the Battle Of Guangzong. Head northeast from Wan Castle, and you’ll spot him next to his horse before you reach the camp. Just have a chat with him, and he’ll give you the horse, which will be automatically equipped for you.

How To Level Up Your Horse In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Your horse will gain experience points (XP) based on the missions you complete while it’s equipped, even if you don’t actively use it. XP is awarded when you finish missions or main story battles, but not during Skirmishes. Look for missions marked with a red diamond featuring a soldier icon; these represent medium-length battles. The total XP your horse earns will depend on the battle’s duration, how much you ride it, and how often you charge into enemies. As your horse levels up, it will unlock special buffs at various levels, which differ for each horse.

How To Switch Horses In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Your initial horse will be automatically set up for you, but there are additional horses available for you to acquire and equip. You can manage your horses in the Battle Preparation menu, which is conveniently located as the last option on the left side of the screen. Each horse comes with unique advantages, and some are naturally faster and more efficient than others, so it’s a good idea to switch them out when you obtain a new one. To unlock new horses, you’ll need to maximize the peace level in a region, and once you do, a reward will be waiting for you at a nearby waypoint—this reward will be a new horse!
